Head of Output (Non Executive Officer)


The purpose of this role is to work closely with the Operations Manager and radio operational team to help plan and deliver key elements of the music policy and overall sound in regard to radio station, Hospital Radio Chelmsford.


Main duties and responsibilities

  • Ensure music policy is met and the overall sound of the radio service delivers the strategic programming aims set out by the Operations Manager in a creative manner, working with the Head of Content.
  • Arrange cover for presenters where necessary.
  • Monitor output and provide feedback every week to output creators (not just presenters), for the purpose of developing skills and improving output.
  • Identify, train, mentor and nurture talented output creators who can be developed to take on more responsibility, be entered into awards and be held up as positive role models for other output creators.
  • Lead compilation and submission of HBA award entries
  • Plan and deliver programming for special events, outside broadcasts and special times of year (e.g. Christmas schedule).
  • Conduct user surveys and use data collected to improve the standard and content of output.
  • Meet with the Operations Manager and Head of Content at least monthly so that activity is aligned to deliver the strategic programming aims.


Technical Skills

  • Able to use the presentation system and automation log.
  • Able to create programme schedules and other communications using tools such as MS Office or other similar software.
  • Able to create user surveys, capture results and analyse what they mean.
  • Able to use other HRC management software.

  • Seeks to develop own skills and the skills of the team, through resources such as HBA training, profession broadcasters’ guidance, written material.
  • Dedicates time to listen to output and provide critique to output creators.
  • Provides leadership, critique and feedback in a way that positively impacts output creators, motivates and equips them to raise their game.
  • Works positively within the wider management and leadership team.
  • Available, approachable, ethos of caring for patients and our listener base.


Other information

  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as required fulfilling the role.
  • Occasional travel required and to transport equipment to and from events.
  • The role is presently not a trustee position on the Committee with attending meetings optional.
